During the Mughal era, Bengal became one of the world's most renowned centres of muslin and silk production — the foremost cotton-producing region of the Indian subcontinent. Its fine cottons and silks travelled the ancient Silk Route to Central Asia, and found eager markets across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and Japan.
With the Portuguese arrival in the late fifteenth century, Indian textiles began reaching Europe directly. At its zenith, Bengal produced more than half of the textiles of the Indian subcontinent, and supplied nearly 40% of all the silk the Dutch imported from Asia — an extraordinary testament to its craftsmanship and global reach.
During the British colonial period, machine-made textiles from Europe flooded Indian markets, gradually displacing Bengal's handcrafted traditions and undermining rural economies that had flourished for generations.
Mahatma Gandhi recognised the profound economic and social setback caused by industrial textiles. His Khadi movement was more than a fabric revival — it was a call for self-reliance, dignity of labour, and the restoration of India's handloom heritage.
It is within this historical continuum that wevn finds its inspiration — a conscious craft collective founded by two women deeply shaped by India's rich inheritance of handloom and handicraft traditions.
